Stallions, no Colts, Sundays

Note to readers: This is a work in progress with minimal use of search engines.
Saturday December 19, 1970
Flashback: I  walked through the Belair- Edison snow-covered alleys thinking about the Colts/Jets game to be playerlater that day and counted down the days until Christmas.

About a month later they won Super Bowl V. Jim O'Brien, one of the last WR/K that played in the NFL.The first championship I watched and it was over by 7PM EST.  BTW, the first ten Super Bowls kicked off before 4PM EST.

I was born between the two Colts title wins in 1958  & 59, watched my Dad and his brothers weep openly as the Cleveland Browns  blanked us 27-0 in the 1964 title game, and  wanted to spit at the TV in 1984 as Irsay-hired Mayflower van  moved the Colts to Indy.

Anyone remember the Colt Corral  TV show broadcast on Monday nights?

One day in the late 1960's my dad spotted Lenny Moore near the corner of Belair Rd and Erdman Avenue and  we walked by  and exchanged hellos - no bum rush for autographs.

We'd cut through the Parkside Apartments on the way home from school trying to guess where Mike Curtis lived and didn't walk in the other direction toward Moravia Rd to see where  Lenny Lyles lived. I was dismayed when news broke that Lyles was arrested on rape charges.

Tony Lorick, Joe Don Looney, Jimmy Orr, & Dennis Gaubatz are among names that bounce around my brain . Stories abound of Jimmy Orr playing on Irish Mist fumes.
The Baltimore Sun (ink copy) published a story yesterday 2/1/16 about Frank Robinson, O's OF, buying Tony Lorick's house in west Baltimore during the 1960's when blacks had a difficult time finding a decent place to live.
Favorite punt and kick returner was the elusive Alvin Haymond.
The Packers Don Chandler missed that FG in 1965, but the refs ruled it good and the Packers moved on to face the Browns in the NFL title game.
Mike Curtis tackling a fan who ran on the field during a game.
Don Shula will always be a traitor for leaving the Colts for Miami.
Folks in Baltimore  try to forget 1969 and the  championship games' losses to New York teams: Jets, Knicks, & Mets.
Don McCafferty was the head coach when Johnny U tossed the "tipped" TD pass to John Mackey in the SBV victory.
Lou Michaels kicked field goals with his left foot and straight on and was a backup defensive tackle. BTW, he died earlier this year, Jan 2016.
Dec 19,1976: Small plane crashing into the upper deck of 33rd St hours after a Colts' loss to the Steelers.

Mid 1970s Memorial Stadium: I was heading up the steps to my seat when I saw these two ladies hooting and hollering, and I looked down confused at two teams in the huddle.  Bert Jones was taking  off his jersey on the sidelines to have his shoulder examined. I see some of Jones southern cock -sure ways in Cam Newton.

Back in the days of TV blackouts, my brother and I were among a few hundred fans who were unable to gets tickets to a MNF Colts /Oilers matchup so we crawled under a hole in the fence near the 33rd street scoreboard and watched the first half before the security guards ushered us off the Memorial Stadium property. When we arrived home we tried to watch some of the second half on TV using the rooftop antenna to get a bad picture from a Philly TV station. I'm guessing this was around 1974. Bubba Smith was playing alongside his brother  on the Oilers DL.

Remember Billy Ray Smith Sr and Fred Miller on the D-Line. How about #DonNottingham, a fullback often referred to as "the human bowling ball."

I try not to think about the Frank Kush years. Mike Pagel and Art Schlicter were the quaterbacks.
At first I was angry at Elway for not wanting to play here, but eventually understood that Irsay Sr, the Colts owner, was a major league a-hole. Side note: #frankkush died last week, June 22, 2017.

How Mike Ditka got to the  NFL Hall of Fame in 1988 before John Mackey (1992) still pisses me off. I'm sure it was because of Mackey's union activity, and that's a poor reason.

#rogercarr had blazing speed running fly pattern but so-so hands.
#colts, #steelers, and #browns were paid to move to the AFC
#loumichaels was a defensive lineman and left-footed straight on kicker
Colts offense was referrred to as " hi diddlediddle Lydell up the middle"

#BigDaddyLipscomb , Colts DL, looking for a fix around Midnight on North Avenue in the late 1950s. Cell phone cameras would've snapped him in a heartbeat today.

Stallions won the CFL championship game in single digit temps on 11/12/95 at Memorial Stadium on 33rd St.
Dec 23, 2017: Indy Colts visit to Bmore to play the Ravens (Browns) today and it stirs up memories listed above. When Irsay's hired Mayflower van  drove out of Baltimore in January , 1984, I became a New Orleans #Saints fan. Why? Mostly because I was fascinated with images of the city of New Orleans and they became my second team the minute they joined the NFL in 1967. I've hung with them solely through Bum/Mora/Ditka etc.

The temperature in the Baltimore area will be near 60 , which it was on 12/24/77 when  the Colts lost the "ghost to the post" playoff game in double OT to the Raiders at 33rd St. The "ghost" was #DaveCasper.
1/9/19
rip #RoyHilton , solid DE for the Bmore Colts who played in the SB5 win over Dallas.  His grandson Brandon Copeland  plays for the Jets.
5/5/19
RIP #ginomarchetti  In a 1964 27-0 loss to to Browns in the NFC title game, Marchetti got pissed when the Browns QB Frank Ryan called a timeout with less than two minutes to go.  Gino was part of  a group tackle in the Pro Bowl a few weeks later that resulted in  Ryan suffering a separated shoulder.  Gino felt this was why #artmodell , Browns then later Ravens owner, never invited him to a Ravens function.

Don Shula, died at age 90 today. He was a great coach and the Colts head coach in the loss to Jets in SB3.

My brother and I got a picture taken with #JimmyOrr at a local department store in the late 1960's. RIP, Mr Orr, one of Unitas' favorite Colts' targets in "Orrsville," the right corner of one of the end zones at Memorial Stadium located on 33rd Street in Baltimore MD. Orr played his college ball at Georgia.
12/24/20
Temp was 60 in the Baltimore area- same as 12/24/77  when Colts lost to Oakland in OT.
