Local print media - catching stories I've missed.

I delivered the Baltimore -News American in the early 1970's, but would buy the rival Baltimore Sun early edition out of " the box" on a a corner to get the West Coast MLB box-scores. When our family went to Ocean City, MD for summer vacation , I would buy Philadelphia newspapers, and in the 1980's I  was hooked on USA Today for awhile. I get the Sunday Sun delivered and catch up on local Baltimore Metro stories.  On occasion, I'll  buy a print version of the NYT , WP,  or WSJ and usually find stories I've missed  by relying on my internet favorites. And, I buy the Hampton Roads,VA area print papers during my annual August visits.
A relative who visited  Kentucky for a few days handed me a copy of the Cincinnati Enquirer, and I  learned of the local excitement over  the new Cincy Amazon Air Hub, with a wink to the local pilot's concern over safety conditions.
When I was 12, I was lucky enough to get a tour of the Baltimore News American and was astonished to learn that the Sunday comics were ready by Thursday. I'm not sure if  I could've contained my youthful bluntness if I had encountered #johnsteadman, a sports columnist, I liked/disliked with intensity.
Another Cincy story: Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science is breaking ground next summer on an Educational Cremation Center, a  facility not offered at other education institutions

Marquis de #Lafayette arrived at Cincinnati’s Public Landing on May 19, 1825 as part of the Revolutionary War general’s tour of the USA.

Sports has played a role in my curiosity about #Cincinnati: The Orioles/Reds faced off in a a few World Series matchups in the 1970s , and I never understood  this 4/21/1970 NBA Trade: Milwaukee Bucks get #OscarRobertson; Cincinnati Royals get Charlie Paulk and Flynn Robinson.

I bet most Bengals' fans didn't think ex HC #marvinlewis would land his next job as a special advisor to Herm Lewis at Arizona St .  His last job at the collegiate level came in 1990-91 as linebackers coach at #Pitt.

I was curious about #RedsRockin’ 150 at Great American Ball Park Friday night July 5. The Red Stocking played their first game on May 4, 1869, and on Oct. 8, 1880 they were expelled from the National League, due in part to a refusal to stop renting out their ballpark on Sundays and to cease selling beer during games.

Cincinnati U debuted new, military parachute-inspired uniforms. #KurtBusch battled his brother Kyle in winning the  Quaker State 400 at Kentucky Speedway which is about an hour from Cincinnati, Ohio.
July 31:  Intrastate Ohio pending  MLB deal with a dash of  San Diego: Reds get Bauer from the Indians, the Indians  get Puig from the Reds and outfielder Franmil Reyes and pitcher Logan Allen from the Padres, and San Diego gets top prospect and outfielder #TaylorTrammell from the Reds.

I'm guessing folks in Cincy got a chuckle from seeing #VontezBurfict, a former Bengal,  playing peacemaker in the Raiders camp in a confrontation between #AB and #MikeMayock , the Raiders GM.
Cincy  U visits Ohio St in what should a tough intrastate  football battle.
Firefighters will bring firehoses to Cincinnati Zoo to clean up the elephants on Sept 9.

I'm catching up on the 8/26/19 print edition of the Daily Press, which has served the Virginia Peninsula since 1896 and am fascinated  by the article on the taking down of the #bonnerbridge which carried N.C. 12 over Oregon Inlet between Hatteras and Bodie islands. 70K tons of debris will be unloaded offshore on four artificial reefs. It's replacement, the Marc Basnight Bridge, opened for traffic in February, 2019.

LA raids Cincy  again.
#usc is about to hire #Cincinnati AD #MikeBohn to the same position. Senior associate athletic director Maggie McKinley will serve as Cincinnati's interim AD until a replacement is named. In April, 2019 UCLA hired Cincy hoops coach Mick Cronin.

I picked up the USA today weekend edition  and read  the section on 50 states, and stopped for a while on a paragraph from Wauchula, Florida  about Sandra, a 33-year old orangutan settling into her new home at the Center for Great Apes in Florida.  I dug further and found that Judge Elena Liberatori of Argentina ruled in 2015 that Sandra is a person entitled to certain rights including the right to enjoy better living conditions. WTF!

From the USA weekend print edition I learned  that starting July 1, 2020 you will have to be 21 to buy tobacco products in PA,  but the age limit  remains at 18 for military veterans and service members. Good luck to the tobacco vendors sorting this law out. !

I picked up the Dec24 print copy of the New York Times while doing some last minute Xmas shopping and found an article about a basement house party in Harlem started in 2012 by Nile Ivey and Kameron McCullough  that's now is held at Barclays Arena. It's called D'Usse Palooza. The entrance fee for the initial 2012 party was a bottle of Hennessy and a a bucket of fried chicken.

In an edition of the print Baltimore Sun I saw an article about The United Mutual Brotherhood of Liberty, a Baltimore based civil rights organization which was active between 1885 and 1891, and successfully fought the exclusion in MD of black mothers from protection under the Bastardly Act, which allowed women to compel their child’s father to provide financial support in cases of abandonment.
On a side note, I can't envision any legislation today  being titled Bastardly.

NYC hires laborers instead of  using inmates, its usual procedure, to bury dead in Hart Island potter's field during the  coronavirus surge. Hart Island has been used to bury New Yorkers with no known next of kin or whose family are unable to arrange a funeral since the 1800s.

Is  MLB coming to Connecticut for 2020? Hartford, CT has two near-empty hotels in its downtown area where the Toronto Blue Jays could sequester . And Dunkin’ Donuts Park, a highly rated AA baseball stadium.
July 25, 2020
Three MLB teams in the state of New York. Hartford put in a  bid but the Blue Jays go back to one of their early options, Sahlen Field, the home of  its A affiliate which is located in downtown Buffalo.
Closer to home, I wish MASN would put #PhilWood back on the air to talk baseball.

I picked up Thursday's print edition of the USA Today and every state in 50States section had a Covid-19 related story. Hey, but I did learn in other sections of the paper that two of the top fast food chains are getting serious about having more "real food" on their menus.

My mom found this 1991 short, MLB prognostication column I penned for an April 11 , 1991 East Baltimore Guide edition. I did my best to make it fit minus the ads . Jackie Watts , the editor at the time and who died a few years ago, wrote the lead-in. Images at blog.

While reviewing some  blog entries about the Cincy area from Fall 2019, I started to wonder if USC is happy that they hired #Cincinnati AD #MikeBohn to the same position. Also, the Bengals "new" stadium proposals haven't been solidified.
In current news, Hamilton City Council will move the historic 19th-century train station built by the Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton Railroad. Wolfe House Movers of Indiana LLC will lift up the station’s two buildings from three or four feet above the ground and hoist the upper areas of the building as part of move to a city property on Maple Avenue near MLK Boulevard.

Lawyers taking care of their own. St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner has reached an agreement with the Missouri Office of Disciplinary Counsel in which she acknowledges mistakes in her handling of the prosecution of former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens but doesn't face disbarment.
She failed to produce documents and mistakenly maintained that all documents had been provided to Greitens’ lawyers in the 2018 criminal case. She used a heavy workload as one of her excuses.
Missouri Supreme Court will review the Disciplinary Counsel agreement.

Rich Klein has dug up thousands of TV shows and clips captured on home video systems or saved by television professionals, creating a nonprofit archive of local Chicago area programming. He digitized many of his finds and put them on a YouTube channel, The Museum of Classic Chicago Television. I bet this one is a doozy, a community college interview of newspaper columnist Mike Royko in his gruff, chain-smoking style.

Civil War-era bullets and a union U.S. cartridge box plate and other relics are lying around the rocks under I-55 bridge in Memphis since the Mississippi River's water levels have receded.

Democratic Wisconsin Gov. Evers isn’t ruling out the use of state funds to construct a passenger rail line between the cities of Madison and Milwaukee that would also expand connections between Chicago and St. Paul, Minnesota, but the GOP will likely oppose his plan even if it’s funded with mostly federal money, because Wisconsin will be on the hook to subsidize it for the next 30 years,

More from Evers: Assembly Speaker Robin Vos claims Governor Evers didn’t consult Republicans or work with the Legislature on plans to fund American Family Field(aka MillerPark)  $290 million for repairs. It should be an interesting battle in the legislature.

The Southeast Wisconsin Professional Baseball Park District is the Brewers’ landlord. The Brewers’ lease calls for the district to cover repairs, but Evers’ office said the end of the five-county sales tax has left the district short of funds.

Brewers MGT opposes the return of the five-county tax and are prepared to commit to a lease extension for the Brewers to remain at American Family Field through at least 2042.
